A few of us went to the Butcher’s Block restaurant last night to celebrate
It was Dorado last night, which I’d never had before. Many people have told me it is the king of Linefishes, but I must admit, it didn’t seem like anything special to me. Tasted like fish, without the fishiness (i.e. like all Linefish doesn’t have the fishy aftertaste you’ll get from a piece of hake).
Was it just poorly prepared (not that it wasn’t tasty – it was great, but tasted like fish and only fish), or is it only supposed to taste of fish? Was I expecting some magic extra taste that isn’t there?
That’s one reason I almost never eat fish out unless it’s fried, battered and cheap. The other is that I’m not overly fond of fish to begin with and usually go for a steak.
Speaking of which, why fish in a steakhouse?
Why fish?
Because I knew I was going to Joop’s on Friday night, and no steak on the planet can match his. And I felt like fish. And I like Linefish. And I was trying not to have too many red meat dishes in a row, since I’ll probably go to a braai tonight and have an awesome steak tomorrow. And I’d never had Dorado and wanted to try it.
That’s rather a good set of reasons there.
My own fishy experiences pretty much consist of the calamari and prawns combo at the Ocean Basket. Which, in one word, is awesome.
I quite like calamari, but prawns don’t really do it for me. I’m not much fond of the flavour and they’re fiddly to eat. Ocean Basket does a good fried hake, though.
AKA Mahi-mahi?
Is this what you ate? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahi-mahi
Re: AKA Mahi-mahi?
It could well be, but the article doesn’t have any photos of it grilled and lightly coated with garlic butter, so I can’t be sure
